He reminds me of a raw Mathias Kiawanuka, and would probably be just as effective against the run as the pass. I'd expect the SEC to take a big interest in him on pure potential alone.

Gerry Bertier-

"You cannot replace a Gerry Bertier... as a player... or person."

As an All-American LB at T.C. Williams, Bertier demonstrated the ability to led an elite defense. He is a physical, intense player whose skills should translate well to the college game. Having played in Virginia, it is likely that he would have received offers from Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State among others. Bertier would have excelled at any of those schools. His passion and drive to compete made him a natural leader. His college career would have paralleled that of AJ Hawk, Mark Herzlich, or Paul Posluszny.

In terms of athletic ability it is clear that Julius Campbell was better, whether it be making plays on the football field or playing ball at the burg. He had all the natural talent you could ask for. The question is, in terms of potential would Julius ever fulfill it? Gerry Bertier was a smart player and a hard hitter. He made up for his lack of speed by taking good angles and outworking other players. In terms of a sure thing, Gerry was a guy who had size and knowledge to step in immediately and contribute. He's a proven winner. Julius would be the player that would need a year or two to develop and barring any setbacks in bulking up, would be among the top Defensive Ends in the nation. Look for Bertier to stay all four year and for Campbell to take his pro-potential to the draft after his junior season. With the extra year under his belt, Gerry would have a more complete college football resume.
